Hey, I need you to hang on to something for me for a little while, if you don't mind.

[It's not that there's a new guy on the Barge - there's not. But anyone used to seeing Captain America around might notice that he's conspicuously missing as of Saturday - or, at least, he's not six-foot two and two hundred twenty pounds anymore. He's five-foot four and about a hundred pounds soaking wet, and he's not apologetic about it in the least. Same haircut, same voice, same style of dress (at least he asked for some civilian clothes that would fit), same attitude.

Steve goes about his day the same as he ever has - he goes for a run through the Barge early in the morning, and he shows up for his lunch shift in the kitchens and his shifts in the infirmary on time. He shows up at T'Pol's cabin for meditation, and he's even in the gym sometimes, working out against the bags. It's just that his mile has gone from two minutes to twenty, and he's got an inhaler in his pocket for those times when running or climbing the stairs - he's not taking the elevator, he refuses - gets to be a little too much.

Of course, he knows people are going to notice, but unless someone says something to him first, they're not going to hear a word about it from him. Actions speak louder than words, after all.]

Well, I ain't an inmate. It's not me you're trying to impress.

But I hope they get it, too.

No. It's not.

[Pause.] I'm not trying to impress anyone, anyway. I'm just trying to be honest.

Good. That's even better.

I really don't like bullies. I don't want to be one of them, and I don't want that to be how the inmates see wardens - any wardens.

... People might still say it ain't good enough. 'Cause you gave up your powers of your own choice, not 'cause you had to. And you could get 'em back.

Maybe they will. I can't change that, I know.

But this isn't for a day, or a week. It's for as long as it takes. As long as I'm here, if that's what it takes.

I think it's noble of you. I'm proud of you.

[He didn't do it to be noble, but... hearing her say that means a lot, nonetheless.]

Since I got here, I was pretty sure the Barge wasn't here just to help inmates, you know?

[Wardens should grow from their experiences, too. Maybe he's just trying to do that.]

I think you're right, 'cause it's still helping me.

Are you being helped right now?

[He considers that, then finally nods.] Yeah. I think so. In a couple of ways. And I don't plan to let them go to waste.

Well, I think you're doing a good job so far.

[He laughs a little.] All the same, I can't say I'm disappointed asthma medicine has come a long way.

You got asthma? Is it the real bad kind?

Yeah, but I've got an inhaler - from a flood, a while back. [He pulls it out of his pocket.] The Admiral said he'd have more for me here, if it ran out. I'll be fine, I'm used to it, and this is way better than the stuff we used to have.

[Although admittedly... it was sort of easy to get used to it being gone, too.]

We got all kinds of future stuff here; it's great! You know Dr. Cambridge fixed my teeth?

No, I didn't - but that's great. [He remembers that change pretty early on, when Tiffany had first arrived, but he hadn't known her well at the time.] He was way ahead of anything I knew about, but he did some stuff for me, too, that I appreciated.

I even kinda miss him.

I miss him, too. He was my therapist.

He was good at that kind of thing. [He'd kept trying to get Steve to come in, but Steve's still sure he doesn't need that kind of help.]

I'm glad he was helping you, though. I think he helped a lot of people, while he was here.

He didn't expect thanks, neither.

No, he didn't. In fact, I'll bet he'd get mad if you did thank him too much. He was that kind of guy, you know?

I thanked him and he was okay with it. Don't know if I did it too much, though.

I don't think you did it too much. I mostly just meant... some people do things because they like the recognition. He did things because they were right, and because I don't think he liked to see the people around him suffering when he could do something about it.

That's why I don't think he was really an asshole, even though everybody said he was.

It was a pretty carefully crafted cover... but no. I don't think he was, either.

Do you think he left on purpose?
